An on-line seminar featuring Quickbooks in California
Agriculture is now being offered on the Internet by the Center for
Agricultural Business (CAB).
Fresno State agricultural economics professor James
Cothern has developed the self-paced tutorial, which can be accessed through
CAB’s web site at www.atinet.org/cati/cab.
“This selected set of slides and accompanying
data files can assist a beginning user in learning Quickbooks for agricultural
record keeping purposes,” stated Cothern in introducing the tutorial.
“Utilizing a self-paced tutorial, a data set can be developed and results
checked by the use of a solution set which has been provided.” The data
files are in self-extracting ZIP files which can be downloaded from the web
site, Cothern said.

The on-line tutorial stems from an earlier
workshop Cothern presented at Fresno State, introducing “The Power of
Quickbooks Pro” to the agricultural community.
Quickbooks is a double entry accounting system,
“but the program takes much of the need for in-depth understanding of
accounting principles from the user since it does much of the necessary
posting,” Cothern said. It can be used for accounting in agricultural as
well as other business enterprises.
The tutorial is divided into four units: Getting
Started with Quickbooks; Quickbooks Data Entry; Practice Coding Data; and
Depreciation and Inventory Management. A set of Powerpoint slides with each
unit leads the user through the various learning steps. The actual Quickbook
data files allow the user to view the system in operation.
During his 10 years as an agricultural economics
research specialist for CAB, Cothern has developed and tested an assortment of
financial management tools geared especially agricultural operations. The
Quickbooks program is one Cothern believes is especially suitable for small to
mid-sized operations.
