The first graduates of the California
Agricultural Safety Certificate Program met in Fresno this fall to complete
final training prior to receiving their certificates of completion.
The training consisted of successful completion
of Module five, the practical experience workshop, where participants gave
oral presentations outlining how they would apply the information they had
learned in the first four modules to their own company’s safety program.
The safety certificate program was launched in
January 1999 in response to expressed needs in the agricultural and
agribusiness industries for advanced training for company safety coordinators,
explained Kimberly Naffziger, director of AgSafe and program development
specialist for the Center for Agricultural Business (CAB). Both AgSafe and CAB
are key sponsors of the safety certificate program.
The program includes 20 hours of training in
California safety laws and regulations; principles of agricultural health and
safety; strategies for injury prevention; and techniques for delivering safety
training. It is specifically aimed at helping those persons assigned
responsibility for implementation of California’s required workplace injury
and illness prevention program. Modules have been offered over the past year
in a variety of locations and times.
Additional program modules will be offered at the
upcoming AgSafe Conference slated for Feb. 2 and 3 in San Luis Obispo,
California (see related article on Page 1). For more information on the
