The leaders of risk control and quality assurance programs from three companies will be featured speakers at an upcoming "teleseminar" on safety in the workplace.

The seminar will be held Wednesday, June 8, at California State University, Fresno and will feature a satellite downlink as the avenue of communication between the panel of speakers and participants.

Title of the program is "Employee Involvement: The Key to an Effective Safety Program." It will demonstrate that a process of employee involvement and total quality Management (TQM) can be used to effectively prevent job injuries. The speakers will discuss the program and highlight the successful application of employee involvement and TQM at three companies.

Speakers will be Kevin Kelley, risk control manager with Tokio Marine Management, and an affiliate faculty member of the Institute of Safety Management, University of Southern California; Larry C. Cox, director of Total Quality Management for Aerojet; and Richard Searies, vice president for personnel and administration at Clarion Manufacturing.

Mr. Kelley will describe the six-step process of employee involvement that was used with dramatic results in more than 150 companies. He will show how this process was applied at two different companies: Gardenia Foods, a cheese processing company; and Clarion Manufacturing Corp. of America, a manufacturer and assembler of car stereo and speaker components.

Mr. Cox will explain how Aerojet applied the process of TQM to all aspects of safety, including the company’s union-management safety committee. He also will host a video visit of the Aerojet Propulsion Systems Plant in Sacramento, California, where employees and managers will relate how this process has been implemented, and the positive effect it has had on their safety program.

During the final segment of the teleseminar, viewers will have the opportunity to telephone questions to the panel members.

The seminar will be produced by California State University, Fresno and the Safety Center Inc., a chapter of the National Safety Council.

It will be hosted locally by CSU, Fresno's Center for Agricultural Business (CAB) and the California Agricultural Technology Institute (CATI), in the CATI Conference Room at 2910 E. Barstow Ave., Fresno. Cost is $65, with discounts available for agricultural companies and organizations. Seating is limited.

For more information, call CAB at (559) 278-4405.
