More than 20 workshops with topics ranging from ergonomics to new pesticide regulations
will be packed into two days of safety education at the upcoming AgSafe Conference, to be
held Jan. 27 and 28 in Visalia, California.
The fifth annual event will be held at the Visalia Convention Center. The focus will be
on safety and health in agriculture. Sessions will be conducted in both English and
Spanish.
Conference coordinator and AgSafe Director Kimberly Naffziger said each day of the
conference will feature a keynote address directed to all participants.
On Wednesday, Jan. 27, Bruce Norton, manager of member services and plant
manager at Sunsweet Growers Inc. in Madera, California, will open the conference with
"Safety - A Success Story." Next Michael C. Alvarez, area manager of the
Department of Industrial Relations for the Cal/OSHA Consultation Service, will provide a
Cal-OSHA update. Three sets of concurrent sessions will follow these two presentations,
and the first day will conclude with a reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
On Thursday, Jan. 28, keynote speaker Valentine DiCerto, a consultant with DiCerto
Enterprises, will present a luncheon address titled, "Minor Changes...Major
Results." Concurrent sessions will be held before and after the luncheon.
Sessions on both days will cover topics such as safety management, workers'
compensation, ergonomics, safety compliance for growers and farm labor contractors, and
supervisor train-ing (in both English and Spanish).
Also to be presented are classes in the new AgSafe Certificate Program, which will be
launched in the spring.
The conference is sponsored by AgSafe and California State University, Fresno's Center
for Agricultural Business and the California Agricultural Technology Institute. Cost to
attend both days is $185 for AgSafe members and $250 for nonmembers. Registrations
postmarked after Jan. 21, 1999 will require an additional $20, respectively.
