Student Assistantships

In the early 1980s a number of endowed student assistantships were established through the Viticulture and Enology Research Center (VERC). The principal sum of over $380,000 annually earns interest to support the following assistantships. For application information, call (559) 278-2089.


Research Assistantships Available to Graduate Students:

Miles Agriculture Division Graduate Student Assistantship: Recipient participates in research and other programmatic activities in viticulture, under the direction of a faculty member. Activities may include field, laboratory, and/or library research as well as instructional assistance. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in agricultural science or related field. Eligibility for admission to graduate program in agriculture.


Research Assistantships Available to Undergraduate and Graduate Students:

Garabedian Family Viticulture Student Assistantship: Recipient must be currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program in the Department of Plant Science with an emphasis in viticulture. Recipient works in the area of raisin processing/research under the direction of a faculty member. It is desirable that the work performed be the basis of a master's thesis or independent study.

Horace O. Lanza Enology Assistantship: Recipient works on research projects in enology under the direction of a faculty member. Activities include field, laboratory, and/or library assignments.

Horace O. Lanza Viticulture Assistantship: Recipient works on research projects in viticulture under the direction of a faculty member. Activities include field, laboratory, and/or library assignments.

H.P. and Edna Metzler Viticulture Assistantship: Recipient works on research projects in viticulture under the direction of a faculty member. Activities include field, laboratory, and/or library assignments.

Student applications are submitted to the administrative office at the end of each spring semester and the awards are announced shortly after. To qualify for applying, a student must have upper-class status in an agricultural science program or a related discipline and submit a letter of nomination by a university faculty member. Six to eight students receive awards annually. Recipients work on research projects in viticulture or enology under the direction of a faculty member. Activities include field, laboratory, and/or library assignments. Assistantships involve part-time and/or full-time work during the fiscal year. At the end of the recipient's assignment, the student is required to submit a brief report of his/her assistantship activities that is forwarded to the respective sponsor(s). Assistantships are administered through the VERC administrative office.
