The president of California State University, Fresno has undertaken a formal search for a new director for the university's Viticulture and Enology Research Center (VERC).

VERC, which operates as one of the four major research centers of the California Agricultural Technology Institute, has been without a permanent director since the 1994 retirement of Vincent Petrucci, who led educational and applied research programs at Fresno State for 45 years.

The new director, once appointed, will assume the Julio Gallo Director's Chair. The new position is one of three at VERC to be funded through a $3 million endowment campaign initiated by Petrucci before he retired. The two other endowed positions are viticulture research scientist, which has been funded as the Ricchiuti Chair, and enology research scientist.

Three key facets of the new director's role will be in VERC administration, market development, and community relations.

The university hopes to have the position filled by this spring. Currently serving as interim VERC director is research scientist and chemistry professor Barry Gump.
