The proliferation of the World Wide Web has made it easy to obtain all kinds of
agricultural information and data. This is certainly true for CIMIS information and
weather data. Many web sites have links to the CIMIS web site while other sites provide
CIMIS data with additional refinement.
Several of these web sites were created in cooperation with CIMIS. There are three
sites that come to mind: University of California Integrated Pest Management (UCIPM)
project, Pomology Weather Services, and Wateright.
University of California Integrated Pest Management project
The Statewide IPM project at the University of California Davis uses temperature data
from CIMIS to calculate degree-days. The database originated in 1980 as part of the
original IMPACT on-line computer system. It stores both current and historical daily
weather data for all 100 CIMIS weather stations. In 1996 it was converted to run on a new
computer, with access through the World Wide Web at http://www.ipm.ucdavsi.edu.
Pomology Weather Services
Pomology Weather Services was created to fulfill the need for a simple and efficient
way to receive timely tree crop information related to weather, specifically for
California fruit and nut growers, researchers and industry. This service is run by
the Fruit and Nut Research and Information Center at the University of California Davis.
This winter, the center started calculating chilling accumulation using hourly temperature
data from CIMIS.
Chilling accumulation is only the first project for this service. The Fruit and Nut
Research and Information Center hopes to continue projects with researchers and industry
in areas such as using weather data to study fruit development and predict harvest dates.
Their address is http://fruitsandnuts.ucdavis.edu/weather/
Wateright
The
Wateright program, developed by the Center for Irrigation Technology (CIT) at
California State University, Fresno, has an on-line database located at http://www.wateright.org. This site includes data from
98 CIMIS stations. It is designed both to be an educational tutorial about weather-based
irrigation scheduling and to provide irrigation schedule guidelines for local sites.
