The Center for Irrigation Technology (CIT) plans to bolster its
education and research capabilities this fall with the addition of two
full-time staff positions.
The center will soon begin searches for an education specialist and an
agricultural engineer. Funding for the education specialist position will come
from an endowment established last year to support educational activities for
both the irrigation industry and regional community.
Initial funding pledges were made by some of the leading irrigation
equipment manufacturers in the United States, said CIT Director David Zoldoske.
Charter funding members of the endowment include Ewing Irrigation Products,
Hunter Industries Inc., David and Sarit Miller, Rain Bird Inc., The Toro
Company, and Valmont Irrigation.
The education specialist will oversee industry and community education
activities designed to raise awareness about the efficient use of water, both
in agricultural and urban settings. Information will be shared through public
workshops, seminars and conferences, through written materials such as
reports, journal and magazine articles, and electronically through the World
Wide Web.
The agricultural engineer position will be funded through a special CATI
augmentation designated earlier this year by the California State Legislature
and approved by Governor Gray Davis (see related article in the Update
Special Report). The engineer will join CIT’s research team as part of the
irrigation equipment testing and field evaluation program.
