Research Interest

Stress physiology, with specific attention to the effects of water and temperature related stresses on plant physiology and crop productivity. In the past, I have worked on the anatomical and physiological responses of annual and perennial plants to flooding and drought conditions. This has been extended to examine the similarities of this research with deficit irrigation and irrigation management of perennial crops.

Since assuming the position of viticulturist I have addressed a wide range of research projects on wine and juice grapes. These have included the effect of regulated deficit irrigation, mechanical pruning and crop load management, and nitrogen fertilization. As a part of these experiments, we have examined their effects on cold hardiness, yield, fruit quality, vegetative growth and development, including root development in some studies. Additional research has focused on thermotherapy procedures used to reduce or eliminate pathogens in wine grapes and tree fruits. This has involved an investigation of heat shock responses in these crops, including the synthesis of heat shock proteins, which are associated with the stabilization of structural and enzymatic proteins during heat stress.

Significant Research Accomplishments
1998 Precision Agriculture Initiatives

Concord - Mechanical Pruning and Mechanical Thinning Study. This study has resulted in the development and use of 'yield monitoring' equipment in conjunction with Harvest Master, Inc. We were the first to apply this new technology, in conjunction with global positioning systems (GPS) to grapevine mechanical thinning and mechanical harvest. This technology is now being experimented with in other areas, especially California. In 1998, with the support and input from Dr. Joan Davenport, we incorporated the use of differential fertilizer applications to this research block to expand our demonstration of precision viticulture. In 1999 Drs. Julie Tarara and Suzanne Lang joined this project to provide information on grapevine water use and remote sensing of canopy quality, respectively. Two presentations, based on this 10-year study, were made at the First Vincent E. Petrucci Symposium at California State University-Fresno.

Concord-Blackleaf Research. With the completion of his Ph.D. research, Dr Russell Smithyman, has shown that blackleaf is not a single phenomenon, but a complex of at least two physiological responses. The first appears to be associated with the inability of the Concord leaf to deal with the high light intensities of the Inland Northwest and results in the formation of free oxygen radicals within the chloroplast. These free radicals subsequently react with various chloroplast components resulting in the loss of chlorophyll and hence reduce photosynthesis. This sequence of events is aggravated by water stress, presumably due to reduced gas exchange and hence reduced availability of electron acceptors. This initial phase of blackleaf development is characterized by discoloration of the mesophyll tissue of the leaf. The second phase of blackleaf development is typical epidermal discoloration associated with the formation of pigment complexes that have very low water solubility and appear black. High levels of UV-B irradiation apparently stimulate the development of these pigments. Research in 1998 demonstrated on a commercial scale that improved irrigation management and the use of commercially available 'sun screens' significantly reduced blackleaf development and resulted in higher yield. Based on preliminary analysis, these practices are economically justified.

Wine Grapes - Cropload - Irrigation Study. The results of this research were a significant portion of the American Society of Enology and Viticulture sponsored International Symposium on Grapevine Irrigation in 1998. There were five presentations from Washington at this meeting that dealt with this work, including presentations by two industry representatives who were involved in the research. Furthermore, this research continues to play an increasingly important role in viticulture management strategies in Washington and have been associated with improvements in fruit and wine quality by the wine maker at the largest winery in the state.

Wine Grapes - cane cold hardiness evaluation. Cold hardiness continues to be a major concern for Washington wine grape growers. The hardiness reporting service we have developed by placing information on the Washington State University wine grape website (winegrapes.wsu.edu) has been the most frequently visited aspect of this site during the late fall, winter and early spring.
