2. Research and Scholarly Activities
Primary research area is in viticulture, with an emphasis on table grapes. Examples of
ongoing research projects include:
Response of new table grape varieties to cultural practices.
Effect of gibberellic acid on berry size and bold fruitfulness of Flame Seedless grapes.
Effect of vine spacing on yield and fruit quality of Fantasy and Crimson Seedless
grapevines.
Evaluation of rootstock for table grape cultivars.
Projects that have been recently completed, including Graduate Student projects, include:
Bird damage on table grapes; the use of bird repellents to reduce crop loss on Flame
Seedless and Ruby Seedless cultivars.
Effects of four different levels of pruning on yield and quality of Flame Seedless

Yield and fruit quality response of Flame Seedless grapevine to four levels of irrigation.

The influence of "Osmolux" bags on berry development and the postharvest behavior and
keeping quality of Fantasy Seedless, Flame Seedless, Ruby Seedless, and Thompson
Seedless grapes.
Research funds and grants in excess of $125,000 have been provided
by government and private agencies to support research and educational
programs in table grapes and related projects during the past 5-6 years.
At least two full-time graduate and several undergraduate students have been
involved in various phases of the research projects on a regular basis.

4. University Farm Laboratory
- - Production Manager - Table Grapes 1984-present
Systemic improvement and renovation of the table grape vineyard
have been the guiding principles in managing the table grape unit.
Old non-productive varieties have been removed. Introduction of
new cultivars and a wide range of modern trellis systems have been
part of the overall plan to progressively increase productivity and
the financial status of the table grape enterprise.
- - Acting Production Manager - Orchards 1992-present
Student involvement in the vineyard/orchard projects has steadily
increased in recent years. Both units have been extensively used for
instruction, student projects, research, and field day activities.
5. Academic and Student Organization Advising
Provide academic counseling to several undergraduate and graduate
students. Thesis Committee Chair for five graduate students and
serve as faculty advisor to 15-20 undergraduate students majoring
in the viticulture/tree fruit area.

Regular Judge of grape varieties/displays at the Fresno Fair
since 1970, and occasionally invited to judge at the Mariposa

growers and international visitors from Afghanistan, Brazil,
Chile, Egypt, France, India, Japan, and Taiwan.
Organize and conduct FFA field day state final contests in Vine
Pruning, Vine Judging. In the past, conducted Citrus Judging and
Tree Judging contests.
Member of the Board of Trustees of the Muslim Society of Central
California, and former Vice-Chair of the Fresno Mosque Executive
Committee.
Consulting and International Agricultural Experience
Provide technical advice and consulting to individual growers and
organizations on grape and tree fruit production problems.
Write patent description documents for new varieties of grapes
and other fruits.
Visited North Yemen on a short-term consulting assignment for
USAID/Tuskagee Institute to study fruit production problems
(Dec. 1977 - Jan. 1978).
Senior Horticulturist and Chief-of-Party for the "Tropical and
Sub-Tropical Fruit Improvement Project" in North Yemen. The
assignment included administrative and technical
responsibilities to improve fruit production capabilities by
introducing new varieties and technology transfer. (Sponsored by
USAID, June 1978 - July, 1979)
Organized and coordinated several seminars, and educational
programs for international students and professional from
several countries:
IFAA-CSUF Agricultural Summer Seminar. One-week program
that includes classroom instruction and field tour studies for a
group of 60-75 students from Brazil and Japan. Sponsored by
International Farmers Aid Association. (1975-present)
NFA-CSUF Agricultural Summer Seminar. Two-week program
that includes classroom instruction and field tours of
agricultural enterprises for about 25-35 agriculture students
from Japan. Sponsored by the National Farmers Academy,
Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Tokyo, Japan. (1990-
present)
Postharvest Technology Workshop for four professionals from
the Ministry of Agriculture in Kenya. Sponsored by the USDA/U.N.
Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). (August 1989)
Educational/Training Program in Grape Pest Management for two
scientists from Egypt. Sponsored by USAID via San Diego State
University. (June-July 1990)
Educational/Training Program in Table Grape Production for two
scientist form Egypt. Sponsored by USAID via San Diego State
University. (May-June 1991)
Short workshop (one to three days) on table grape production for
a group of grape growers from Egypt (eight growers in June 1993
and 15 growers/professionals in January 1994). Sponsored by
ACD and UC-Davis, respectively.
Educational/Training Program in Postharvest Technology for a
group of four professionals from Costa Rica. Sponsored by USAID
via Georgetown University and Kings River Community College.

South Korea to participate in a seminar on "Agricultural
Biotechnology" as a member of the CSUF team to a Tri-lateral
Seminar in Seoul, Korea. (October 1988)
Japan as a guest of Tokyo University of Agriculture to learn
about the university's grape breeding program. Visited the farm
laboratory and related facilities and commercial farms.
Egypt with a three-faculty team to learn about agricultural
development and develop an exchange program with Ain-Shams
University. Sponsored by a USAID-BIFAD grant to CSUF,
Fresno.(December 1980 - January 1981)
Egypt with four-faculty team to explore possible areas of
cooperation between CSUF and Zagazig University and potential for AID sponsored
training programs for recent university graduates. (December 1984 - January 1985)
Egypt to visit major grape growing regions (July 1989) and a volunteer for Farmer-
to-Farmer program (December 1989 - January 1990). Worked with growers on
pruning and training skills, presented several seminars and "village" meetings on
grape production problems. Sponsored by Agric. Co-op Development
International (ACDI), Farmer-to-Farmer Project (1989-1990).
