Fresno State College graduate Ralph Durant of Kerman (left), savors the moment as professor emeritus Vincent Petrucci autographs Durants just-purchased bottle of white table wine at California State University, Fresno Feb. 5.
The premiere vintage was produced by Fresno States new commercial winery and is named after Petrucci, founder of the universitys viticulture and enology research programs. Petrucci also served as director of the Viticulture and Enology Research Center, an applied research arm of the California Agricultural Technology Institute (CATI).
The crush marks a new era of winemaking for Fresno State as the university becomes the first in the nation to hold a commercial license. This is in addition to an experimental winery, which serves as a research and training resource for both undergraduate and graduate students.
The first release of 497 cases was sold out the day it was made public. Petrucci was on hand and the University Farm Market to autograph labels.
