Grape growers invited to field day at VERC

rape growers will have an opportunity to hear the latest in viticulture research results at the upcoming Grape Day 1998 field day at California State University, Fresno on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
Research scientists from the universitys Viticulture an Enology Research Center (VERC), as well as representatives from the University of California and other cooperative research organizations in the San Joaquin Valley, will participate. Industry representatives will be on hand to display their goods and services.Topics to be addressed, through paper and poster presentations, include integrated pest management; sustainable agriculture and organic practices; grapevine diseases; the effect of vineyard trellis systems on fruit quality and yield of wine grapes; canopy management of San Joaquin Valley wine grapes; evaluation of production systems for Syrah grapevines; evaluation of USDA rootstock cultivars; evaluation of subsurface drip irrigation systems; vineyard mechanization practices; use of adsorbent resins to remove unstable protein from grape juice and wine; and basic search strategies for finding viticulture and enology information on the Internet.
The program will run from 8 a.m. to noon. Preregistration fee (received by Aug. 5) is $15. Walk-in registration is $20. For registration or sponsorship information, call (559) 278-7135.
